He was Principal conductor of that orchestra from 1990 to 1998. The South Korean piano virtuoso Yeol Eum Son, prize-winner of the Moscow Tchaikovsky competition as well as of the Van Cliburn Competition, plays Prokofiev&#8217;s Second piano concerto in a program which also contains Schnittke&#8217;s Homage \u00e0 Grieg and Rachmaninov&#8217;s Second Symphony. For his interpretation of this symphony,Maestro Kitaenko has obtained the biggest acclaim. The music magazine Pizzicato wrote about his recording with the Cologne based G\u00fcrzenich-Orchester on the label Oehms Classics: &#8220;In his powerful account of the Second Symphony, Dimitri Kitaenko shows Rachmaninov&#8217;s struggle for light in a deeply felt and nuanced performance.
